Meet our staff

Stephanie K. Smith, Director

Stephanie K. Smith is in her twenty-second year as the Director of Instrumental Music at Teays Valley High School where the Marching Band, Concert Band and Wind Ensemble have earned numerous awards and ratings of Superior
at the District and State level. She earned a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from The Ohio State University and a Master of Music Education with Instrumental Emphasis from Capital University.  Ms. Smith is in her thirty-second year of teaching, having taught at both Bishop Ready and Madison Plains before accepting the appointment at Teays Valley where she is the high school fine arts department chair and serves on the building leadership team. Ms. Smith is the 2015 recipient of the Columbus Symphony Secondary Music Educator Award. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Ms. Smith is an OMEA Marching Band, Solo & Ensemble and Large Group Adjudicator and currently serves as the Immediate Past Chair of the OMEA Adjudicated Events Committee. She performs on flugelhorn with the Brass Band of Columbus and she is also a charter member of the Athena Brass Band.  Ms. Smith’s professional affiliations include the National Association for Music Education, the Ohio Music Education Association, the National Honorary Band Fraternity Phi Beta Mu, the International Women’s Brass Conference and the North American Brass Band Association.

Luke R. Davis, Assistant Director

Luke Davis is excited to enter his fourth year working with the bands of Teays Valley Local Schools as an Assistant Director and Percussion Specialist. Prior to coming to Teays Valley, Mr. Davis worked with bands throughout Ohio and Illinois as a percussion arranger and director. Originally from Dayton, Mr. Davis earned his bachelor’s degree in Musicology and Percussion Performance from Miami University where he was recognized as the Miami University Outstanding Music Scholar in 2010. Davis then earned a Master’s Degree in Ethnomusicology from Bowling Green State University in 2012 before going to the University of Illinois with his future wife to begin Doctoral work in Jazz Performance for Drum Set. With Doctoral course work complete, Mr. Davis began pursuing his second Master’s Degree in Music Education and Illinois State Certification. Having taught young musicians for the past several years as well as having written music for competitive percussionists and marching bands throughout that time, Mr. Davis is thrilled to continue his work with the young musicians that make up the Golden Sound and Middle School bands at Teays Valley. Luke Davis is an Innovative Percussion Educational Artist as well as a member of the Percussive Arts Society, National Association for Music Education, and the Society of Ethnomusicology.

Jayne Canaday, Staff Assistant

Jayne Canaday has taught in the public school system for 35 years. She  retired from Groveport Madison Local Schools in 2019, after spending her entire career as Director of Bands at Groveport Madison Middle School North, as well as the assistant band director at Groveport Madison High School. Her students were consistent in participating in OMEA Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Events, as well as large group adjudicated events every year.  In addition, the high school band performed at Walt Disney World in the spring of 2017 was invited to perform at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, Georgia in December of 2018.  Since beginning with The Golden Sound, Jayne’s duties have included assistant  marching band director, teaching private lessons, principal accompanist for solo and ensemble students and directing clarinet choir and pep band.  Jayne earned a bachelor’s degree in music education and a masters degree in piano pedagogy, both from The Ohio State University. She held a double major in piano and clarinet as an undergraduate, was a member of the concert band and played trombonium for 5 years in The Ohio State University Marching Band.  Currently a member of The Brass Band of Columbus, Jayne enjoys continuing to perform and share her joy of music with others. She is a member of the Ohio Music Education, the National Association for Music Education and the North American Brass Band Association. 

Gina Warren, Color Guard Instructor

Gina Warren has been involved in the marching arts community for 7 years. As a 2019 graduate from Teays Valley High School, Gina spent all 4 years of high school as a member of the Golden Sound Color Guard. Being part of The Golden Sound gave her a passion for color guard and prepared her for supplemental performance opportunities. In addition to teaching the guard at Teays Valley, Gina also still participates in winterguard. She has performed with organizations such as Columbus Saints, Calypso Independent, and is now a member of Onyx. In 2019, Gina performed with Onyx Independent A and was a WGI finalist, scoring 5th place at WGI World Championships and 1st place at the Mid-East Performance Association Championships. In 2020, Gina performed with Onyx Independent World. At the end of the shortened season, Onyx IW was the first World Class group to break a score of 90 in the 2020 WGI season and was seeded to be 1st in championships. In 2021, Gina filled a spot in Onyx Independent A late in the season and was once again a WGI finalist. She plans to continue her association with the Onyx organization for years to come. Gina is excited to return to Teays Valley for her 3rd year as a member of the color guard staff. Additionally, she serves as a dance choreographer with the Middletown High School Color Guard program. She has also worked for the Ohio Indoor Performance Association as a media team photographer. Gina is currently studying Communication at The Ohio State University.

Allison Wilburn, Band Staff Assistant

Allie Wilburn is our newest staff member having recently graduated from Bowling Green State University. Allie is a former member and Drum Major for the Golden Sound, and was a leader and flute player with the Falcon Marching Band during college. She recently accepted a teaching position with the Teays Valley Local School District as an Intervention Specialist at Ashville Elementary.

Lisa A. Galvin, Music Arranger

A native Ohioan, Lisa Galvin holds two degrees in Music Education from The Ohio State University, and recently retired after 30 years of successful teaching in the Reynoldsburg and Hilliard City School Districts.  Her middle school and high school performing ensembles have been invited to perform at local, state and national venues, and they consistently received Superior Ratings at both District and State level events sanctioned by the Ohio Music Education Association.  Lisa joined the arranging staff for The Ohio State University Marching Band in 2008, and her music has been featured in several viral videos of the famed band on YouTube. She is a composer with the C.L. Barnhouse Company, and has a number of published wind band and string orchestra compositions. Her music has been featured in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Tournament of Roses Parade, the Fiesta Bowl, several college and high school band programs and a number of viral videos on YouTube. She has professional affiliations with the Ohio Music Education Association, the International Women’s Brass Conference, Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society, the American School Band Directors Association and Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity. She currently serves as founding member and solo hornist with the Brass Band of Columbus and the Athena Brass Band, comprised of 35 women brass professionals from across the United States, Canada and Japan.

Taylor C. Marino, Middle School Band Director

Taylor Marino is in eighth her year as the Director of Instrumental Music at Teays Valley East and Teays Valley West Middle Schools.  She graduated from Capital University with a Bachelor of Music Education, a Bachelor of Flute Performance and a Secondary Specialization in Music Therapy. Before coming to Teays Valley, Mrs. Marino taught at Madison Plains for two years. Over the last ten years, Mrs. Marino has been honored to work with many bands across the Central Ohio area. In 2016, Mrs. Marino was a guest conductor for the District 15 Middle School Honor Band. She is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the Ohio Music Education Association, and The Grove City Community Winds.
